Package Details and Information
John Day River For Steelhead — Oregon (OR) Package:20062
The John Day River - 5 days / 4 nights Adventure.
The John Day River, which is located just to the east of the world famous Deschutes, and is the second longest free-flowing river in the U.S., is quickly becoming a destination fishery for both bass and steelhead on a fly. In 2001, some educated guesses were made that nearly 50,000 wild steelhead returned to the John Day River system! Only one word can describe this, REMARKABLE!
The majority of the river is bordered by private land with little to no public access, making the fish are very receptive to most well presented flies.
Many small mouth bass in the river range from 14-18 inches in length with others growing even larger. The steelhead average a solid 7-8 lbs. with larger ones frequently landed. Guides provide instruction on casting and fishing techniques as well as insight to the history of the area. Each long day on the river, your guide will dazzle you with riverside cuisine to keep you focused on the fishing, morning, noon and night.
As mid-summer draws closer, the John Day drops to a nearly impassable water levels by boat. Due to lack of public access along the river, the upper portion is generally a 4-day float trip covering about 50 miles. Late fall to early winter steelhead trips can be arranged as well, covering close to 70 miles and taking the majority of a week to float. Staying in Condon however, allows one to experience one of the John Day's best kept secrets, its winter steelhead, on single a day float trip. This is most certainly a river that needs to be on your must fish list!
